Diets and dieting often do more harm than good. They make you think about food all the time, they make you feel bad if you do not eat “diet-type” foods, they slow your metabolism because too few calories are consumed.
Intuitive Eating puts you back in touch with eating when you are physically hungry, stopping when you are physically full, and challenges you to get rid of all the rules you impose on yourself in order to meet the demands of any “diet”. For these reasons, intuitive eating can help you realize your body’s natural and healthy weight.
In Evelyn Tribole’s and Elyse Resch’s book, Intuitive Eating, they review 10 principles of Intuitive Eating. Principles like Rejecting the Diet Mentality, Honoring Your Hunger, Making Peace with Food, and Challenging the Food Police, for example. Becoming an Intuitive Eater is a process and it takes time to switch from always thinking diet, diet, diet to eat when you are hungry, stop when you are full and be healthy no matter the number on the scale.
One of the first steps you can take to become an intuitive eater is to vow never to diet again. Diets don’t work, so why start something that is destined to fail from the beginning? Instead vow to become an intuitive eater.
Think about your hunger and your stomach on a scale from zero to 10. Zero is completely empty, 10 is completely full. Every time you start to eat, take a moment to check your tank. Where do you fall on the scale? A 3? An 8? Ideally it should be at a 3 or 4. If it is 5 or higher you may be eating for reasons other than biological hunger. If it is a 2 or lower you may have gone too long without eating and may be at risk for overeating.
