Omega 3 Fatty AcidsYou've probably heard or seen something about Omega 3 fatty acids on the radio, TV or in a magazine. But how much do you really know about them? Hopefully our explanation will help. Omega 3 fatty acids are a polyunsaturated fatty acid, meaning they have multiple double bonds. Humans lack the enzymes necessary to make Omega 3 fatty acids. Because we can't make these fatty acids they are referred to as "essential nutrients," meaning we have to get them through our foods. Most Western diets are higher in Omega 6 fatty acids rather than Omega 3 fatty acids because of the use of vegetable oils instead of oils rich in Omega 3 fatty acids and because of the decline in fish consumption in our society.
