If you are the type of person that doesn't enjoy going to a fitness center or being active in hot, wet or cold weather, that you may want to consider an investment in some sort of home exercise equipment.

The American College of Sports Medicine is the world's largest exercise science organization. ACSM has put together information on things to consider when purchasing home fitness equipment such as treadmills, ellipticals, and free weights. These brochures address safe use of equipment, working at the right intensity, and basically getting the most out of the equipment.

Here are the ASCM (American College of Sports Medicine) guidelines for healthy aerobic activity.

  • Exercise 3 to 5 days each week*
  • Warm up with a mild-intensity activity for 5 to 10 minutes before stretching and before vigorous aerobic activity
  • Maintain your exercise intensity for 30 to 60 minutes for maximum benefit
  • Gradually decrease the intensity of your workout to cool down during the last 5 to 10 minutes, then stretch again.

*If weight loss is your major goal, participate in 60 + minutes of aerobic activity four to five days each week.
